4G Mobile Internet Service Launches in Malaysia for Home Users

Kuala Lumpur  - 4G Mobile Internet Service Launches in Malaysia by YTL Communications Sdn Bhd today launched the world's first fully converged 4G mobile Internet service with voice offering the industry's lowest rates at nine sen a minute, per SMS or per 3MB of data through its pay-as-you-go plan.

YTL Communications executive chairman Tan Sri Dr Francis Yeoh said: "Every Yes account comes with high-speed Internet access and a mobile phone number, making the convergence of data and voice seamless. Our subscribers will have not only high-speed mobile data access but will also enjoy voice, online chat and SMS services that can be accessed from anywhere in the world, through the Internet."

The Yes service was officially launched by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He added that it would be giving 300MB of data or 100 minutes of voice calls a month free to every student registered under its Education Partner programme. "I am also pleased to announce that we will be extending the Education Partner programme to all government-sponsored scholars abroad."

Speaking at the launch, Muhyiddin said the service would help the government improve the household broadband penetration which is currently at 54.5%.

What's 4G Mobile Internet Service?
A 4G system is expected to provide a comprehensive and secure all-IP based solution where facilities such as ultra-broadband (giga-bit speed such as 100+ MiB/s) Internet access, IP telephony, gaming services, and streamed multimedia may be provided to users.

4G is being developed to accommodate the quality of service (QoS) and rate requirements set by further development of existing 3G applications like mobile broadband access, Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), video chat, mobile TV, but also new services like HDTV. 4G may allow roaming with wireless local area networks, and may interact with digital video broadcasting systems.

Some key features (primarily from users' points of view) of 4G mobile networks are as follows:
  • High usability: anytime, anywhere, and with any technology
  • Support for multimedia services at low transmission cost
  • Personalization
  • Integrated services

4G Wireless Standard
Basically all proposals are based on two technologies:
  • LTE Advanced standardized by the 3GPP
  • 802.16m standardized by the IEEE (i.e. WiMAX)
Present implementations of WiMAX and LTE are largely considered a stopgap solution that will offer a considerable boost while WiMAX 2 (based on the 802.16m spec) and LTE Advanced are finalized. Both technologies aim to reach the objectives traced by the ITU, but are still far from being implemented.
Pre-4G technologies such as mobile WiMAX and first-release 3G Long term evolution (LTE) have been available on the market since 2006 and 2009 respectively, and are often branded as 4G. Current versions of these technologies do not fulfill the ITU-R requirements of data rates approximately up to 1 Gbit/s for 4G systems.

Mahathir calls for return to Bretton Woods system of currency exchange rates

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who fought off an attack on the ringgit with capital controls during the Asian financial crisis, said currency trading is “silly” and the world should return to the Bretton Woods System of fixed exchange rates.

Currency wars are futile and the U.S. Federal Reserve’s latest quantitative easing plan will result in hot money pushing up prices in small countries, the 85-year-old said in an interview in Kuala Lumpur today. The Fed on Nov. 3 said it intends to buy an additional $600 billion of Treasuries to foster growth.

“When you lose money, you must accept that you have lost money,” he said. “When you lose money and then you go back to your house and print more money for yourself, that makes things quite ridiculous. This is money that is not real, yet this money can destabilize by, for example, going into small countries to invest in stock exchanges.”

The Bretton Woods system of monetary management established the rules for commercial and financial relations among the world's major industrial states in the mid 20th century. The Bretton Woods system was the first example of a fully negotiated monetary order intended to govern monetary relations among independent nation-states.

The chief features of the Bretton Woods system were an obligation for each country to adopt a monetary policy that maintained the exchange rate of its currency within a fixed value—plus or minus one percent—in terms of gold and the ability of the IMF to bridge temporary imbalances of payments.

Under the Bretton Woods system, central banks of countries other than the United States were given the task of maintaining fixed exchange rates between their currencies and the dollar. They did this by intervening in foreign exchange markets. If a country's currency was too high relative to the dollar, its central bank would sell its currency in exchange for dollars, driving down the value of its currency. Conversely, if the value of a country's money was too low, the country would buy its own currency, thereby driving up the price.

Email will be Dead, said by Mark Zuckerberg CEO Facebook

Email is dead, or will be dead. That's the underlying message of CEO Mark Zuckerberg as he unveiled Facebook's revamped messaging system in San Fracisco on Monday night. The popular networking service was supposed to launch a "Gmail killer" at the much-hyped event. But it was far from it. Nevertheless, the new avataar will raise network communication to a level that will shake the Gmails and Yahoos.

Zuckerberg himself painted the picture thus: "I don't expect people to wake up tomorrow and say, 'I'm going to shut down my Yahoo account or my Gmail account'...Maybe one day, six months, a year, two years out people will start to say this is how the future should work."

One of the biggest improvisations is that Facebook users will be able to communicate to non-Facebook users via Facebook using an @facebook.com ID. This is a possible threat to email services as now Facebook users will have to go to Hotmail or Yahoo or Gmail to communicate with non-Facebook users. So, at least theoretically, there's a possibility of a good number of Facebook users gradually making @facebook.com their default email ID.

Secondly, Zuckerberg foresees an era when email will not be the only means of communication between two people. A Pew study shows that text messaging is the most preferred means of communication for US teens, very few used email. He said 350 million members (out of over 500 million members) use Facebook's messaging system. So Facebook decided to take it a step ahead, by bringing emails, SMS, instant messages besides Facebook messages on one platform. Andrew Bosworth, a software engineer at Facebook, said, "People should share however they want to share...If you want to send me an email and I want to get it in a text message, that should work. So, all the communication -- whether it be via SMS, IM, email or Facebook messages -- will be in the user's 'Social Inbox'".

AOL, which is in the process of revamping its email, differed with this forecast of death of emails. Its senior vice-president of consumer products Brad Garlinghouse told the BBC that email remained one of the killer apps on the internet. But hours after the Facebook announcement, Google CEO Eric Schmidt at the Web 2.0 summit, welcomed the new competition. "More competition is always good because competition makes the market larger," he said. "It brings more people in. We are all served by having everybody in the world get online."

Facebook will bury traditional email 'subject' line, the cc and bcc. It envisages a seamless conversation between two people across any mode of communication.

Facebook’s latest evolution of Messages ties in multiple forms of communication–SMS, IMs, email–from Facebook and other platforms to allow users to communicate in real-time, on-the-go through whichever messaging tool they prefer. “You decide how you want to talk to your friends: via SMS, chat, email or Messages. They will receive your message through whatever medium or device is convenient for them, and you can both have a conversation in real time,” Facebook wrote in a blog post

PM do video conference with members of the Malaysian community and students in six countries

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was speaking at a video conference with members of the Malaysian community and students in six countries -- Japan, China, Russia, Ukraine, France and Ireland -- in conjunction with Aidiladha, at the prime minister's official residence Seri Perdana, here.

Present were his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

Najib said the show of confidence was crucial, saying, "this (confidence) does not come as a given in a highly critical market environment."

A videoconference or video conference (also known as a videoteleconference) is a set of interactive telecommunication technologies which allow two or more locations to interact via two-way video and audio transmissions simultaneously. It has also been called 'visual collaboration' and is a type of groupware.

 Advantages of Video Conferencing

Video conferencing is used by many businesses usually to save both time and money. One of the great advantages of video conferencing is that two or more parties can have a virtual face to face meeting to conduct business, which is seen as more beneficial than just a conference call. Other parties such as educators and health professionals use video conferencing when giving lectures, teaching about topics that require visual cues or visual information. Health professionals can give a diagnosis by conducting an examination via a video conference. There are many advantages to this technology and this has a lot to do with its exponential growth in recent years.
